Kick-off meeting of M.A.R.I.O in Castelbottaccio

On 9 November 2023, the kickoff meeting of the M.A.R.I.O project, co-financed by the Interreg Italy-Croatia 2021/2027 Territorial Cooperation Programme, took place.
The meeting was held in the Municipality of Castelbottaccio, which is the leader partner of the project supported by the Municipality of San Michele Salentino and the Municipality of Orebić, the other two project partners.
M.A.R.I.O project aims to tackle the phenomenon of migration of young educated people from peripheral rural areas to the main cities of the Italian and Croatian territories involved (outmigration). Through the project, the partners intend to analyze this trend from an integrated territorial development strategy perspective, improving, among other things, the knowledge of institutional decision-makers, their capacity for integrated governance and for cooperation at vertical level to co-design measures and solutions to reduce or reverse this migration phenomenon, all in a cross-border cooperation view.
Specifically, the project carries out its goal through several activities, such as:
- Analysis of the current status on the planning and the debate on outmigration and collection of good practices on containment measures;
- Qualitative, quantitative and comparative analysis of the phenomenon and related mapping;
- Collection of digital solutions and best practices;
- Preparation local action plan.
The project M.A.R.I.O therefore contributes to analyze and fight the phenomenon of brain drain and outmigration in the territories involved in the Programme and to make possible for young people to go back, with integrated measures responding to their needs expectations.
