Located on the eastern Adriatic coast, Zadar County is characterized by a diverse landscape that includes coastal areas, islands, fertile agricultural land, karst fields, forests, and mountainous hinterlands. This geographic diversity creates a unique natural environment but also exposes the area to a range of climate-related and environmental risks.
The DIGITAL PLAN pilot area covers four locations across the county – Privlaka, Zemunik Donji, Gračac, and the Musapstan Forest Park near Zadar. Together, these sites represent different climatic and environmental conditions, from coastal and agricultural zones to forested and inland areas. Such diversity makes the pilot area particularly suitable for monitoring environmental changes and assessing climate-related risks across different types of landscapes.
Like many Mediterranean regions, Zadar County is increasingly affected by extreme weather events, including prolonged droughts, heatwaves, strong winds, intense rainfall, and a growing risk of wildfires. These challenges can have significant impacts on local communities, natural ecosystems, agriculture, and critical infrastructure.
Through the DIGITAL PLAN project, the pilot area will support the collection of environmental data and the testing of digital approaches for climate risk monitoring and management. The knowledge gained will contribute to a better understanding of local climate challenges, support evidence-based decision-making, and strengthen the resilience of communities and ecosystems across the region.
