Coastal and Underwater Clean-Up in Lopud Promotes Marine Protection

13/04/2026

On 21 March 2026, a coastal and underwater clean-up was held at Šunj Beach on the island of Lopud, organized by the Public Institution for the Management of Protected Natural Areas of Dubrovnik-Neretva County in collaboration with the Orsan Sailing Club.

The initiative brought together divers, sports associations, and sea lovers to help protect the marine environment. A significant amount of waste was removed from the seabed, highlighting the ongoing challenge of marine pollution and the need for continuous action.

The event also raised awareness about underwater noise pollution—an often invisible but serious threat to marine ecosystems—alongside marine litter.

During the day, the UNDERSEA project, funded by the Interreg Italy–Croatia programme, was presented. The project focuses on improving the monitoring and management of underwater noise in the Adriatic Sea. A dedicated mobile app was also introduced, allowing both experts and citizens to collect and analyze underwater sound data.

This initiative highlighted the importance of cooperation between institutions, organizations, and local communities in protecting marine and coastal environments, and in promoting more sustainable management of the Adriatic Sea.
