Project specific objectives
To enhance the management and solution planning for the protection of the Adriatic Sea ecosystems against human-generated underwater noise pollution, expanding the current monitoring system in terms of inclusion of new areas; introduction of new monitoring techniques; monitoring of additional noise sources; extension of the monitoring temporal window to business-as-usual; provision of new digital tools for the integrated cross-border management and protection and preservation of biodiversity.

Project main outputs
- implementation and expanding of the underwater sound monitoring network to assess the noise pollution, by setting up monitoring stations along the whole Adriatic basin, also in shallow water and deep sea.
- collection of processed underwater sound data that will be made public and open source, as it was done in the case of SOUNDSCAPE, fully available to the international stakeholder community.
- setting up of the first Adriatic cetacean echolocation click library will be the first shared library of its kind for the Adriatic Sea and will represent a valuable reference source for all other cetacean research in the Mediterranean Sea.
- creation of a phone app for small vessel localization to be used during Noise Clean-up events and other public awareness communication objectives.
- estabilishment of an Atlas of monthly and annual statistical maps of whole Adriatic Sea soundscape, potentially available to different stakeholders.
About section
About
The UNDERSEA project aims to enhance sustainable growth in the Adriatic Sea region by improving the cross-border monitoring, evaluation, and mitigation of human-generated underwater noise pollution. Building on the achievements of the SOUNDSCAPE project, UNDERSEA expands data collection and integrates innovative modeling techniques to further improve understanding and management of underwater noise pollution in the Adriatic Sea.
It will establish a monitoring network covering the entire Adriatic Sea and introduce innovative methods for noise monitoring, including the evaluation of noise from tourism and local fishery activities. By standardizing data collection and sharing procedures, UNDERSEA seeks to increase knowledge and promote sustainable mitigation efforts across the Adriatic basin. The project's outcomes will contribute to the development of new tools for managing the marine environment and shared natural resources, fostering cross-border collaboration and enhancing area-based conservation measures.

18/12/2025Deep Listening: Exploring the Depths of the Adriatic.
The Adriatic Sea hosts a complex underwater soundscape shaped by biological, natural and anthropogenic sources. Increasing human-generated noise poses a growing threat to marine organisms that rely on sound for communication, orientation and survival, making bioacoustics a key tool for ecosystem assessment and conservation. This article outlines over two decades of marine bioacoustic research in the Adriatic, focusing on the Interreg Italy–Croatia projects SOUNDSCAPE and UNDERSEA. Using long-term passive acoustic monitoring, these initiatives document marine biodiversity, assess underwater noise and support the creation of a reference library of cetacean vocalisations, providing essential data for research, management and conservation.
