Info Day in Kaštela: Exploring Archaeological Heritage Through Education and Digital Innovation

The Kaštela City Museum, located in the historic Vitturi Castle, hosted the ARCHAEODIGIT Project Info Day, bringing together visitors of all generations to discover the city’s rich archaeological and cultural heritage through interactive educational activities, the presentation of project results, and the opening of a new exhibition.
The event was organised within the framework of the ARCHAEODIGIT – ARCHAEOlogical DIGITal paths for an inclusive and sustainable tourism project, implemented through the Interreg Italy–Croatia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme and co-financed by the European Union. The Info Day highlighted how digital innovation, education and community involvement can contribute to making archaeological heritage more accessible, engaging and sustainable.
Young Explorers Discover Kaštela’s Archaeological Heritage
The morning programme was dedicated to the youngest visitors, with more than 60 children taking part in the workshop “Little Archaeologists on a Great Adventure”. Through games, exploration activities and puzzle-solving challenges, young participants embarked on a journey through Kaštela’s archaeological heritage, discovering the stories hidden within the museum collections.
Guided by Nikolina Skoko, the children explored the museum’s permanent exhibition, followed archaeological clues, solved riddles and learned fascinating facts about prehistoric communities, Roman life, ancient trade and shipwrecks. The workshop also introduced participants to the digital tools developed within the ARCHAEODIGIT project, combining learning, play and technology in an engaging and interactive experience.
Anamarija Bralić, Senior Curator at the Kaštela City Museum, explained that the aim of the Info Day was to engage visitors of all generations. The morning activities were specifically designed for children, allowing them to become “little archaeological detectives” through a museum treasure hunt based on searching for clues and solving tasks. By combining educational activities with digital tools developed through ARCHAEODIGIT, the workshop offered children a new and exciting way to discover Kaštela’s archaeological heritage.
Presenting ARCHAEODIGIT Results and Digital Innovations
The evening programme focused on the presentation of the ARCHAEODIGIT project, its objectives, activities and main achievements. Visitors had the opportunity to learn more about the implementation of the project across the Italy–Croatia Programme area and discover how digital technologies can support the interpretation, preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.
During the presentation, the Kaštela City Museum showcased the new digital content developed to enrich its permanent exhibition. The newly introduced solutions include an interactive introductory touchscreen in the exhibition's archaeological section and an interactive 3D model of the Trstenik archaeological site in Kaštel Sućurac. The Trstenik archaeological site was selected due to the exceptional value of its remains of Roman ships dating back to the 2nd century AD. Their presentation to the public represents a particular challenge due to the complexity of their conservation and ongoing research. Thanks to the digital solutions developed within ARCHAEODIGIT, visitors can now explore this important heritage site in a more accessible, engaging and immersive way.
Ivan Šuta, Director of the Kaštela City Museum, highlighted that the ARCHAEODIGIT project has significantly enhanced the permanent exhibition by introducing innovative digital content. He underlined that the interactive tools developed through the project allow visitors to discover archaeological heritage in new ways while also strengthening international cooperation and creating valuable experiences that can support future initiatives.
Strengthening Heritage Through Innovation and Cooperation
The Info Day concluded with the opening of the exhibition “AD MENSAM! DE RE COQUINARIA IN NARONA / Come to the Table! The Art of Cooking in Narona”, dedicated to Roman gastronomy and intangible cultural heritage. The exhibition provided visitors with a further opportunity to explore aspects of daily life in the ancient world and discover the connections between archaeological findings, traditions and cultural practices.
The ARCHAEODIGIT Info Day demonstrated the importance of combining education, community engagement and digital innovation to create new ways of experiencing archaeology. Through the cooperation between the City of Kaštela – Department for Economic Development and European Union Funds, the Kaštela City Museum and international project partners, the project has contributed to improving the accessibility, interpretation and promotion of archaeological heritage across the Adriatic region.
By introducing innovative digital tools and involving local communities, ARCHAEODIGIT continues to support a more inclusive and sustainable approach to cultural tourism, ensuring that archaeological heritage can be discovered, understood and appreciated by both current and future generations.
