Blue Economy – The Key to Sustainable Development of the Adriatic

16/07/2026

The term blue economy has been increasingly mentioned in European development strategies in recent years, but what does it actually mean?

The blue economy encompasses all economic activities connected to the sea – from fisheries and aquaculture to maritime transport, tourism, and renewable energy sources. Its goal is not only economic development, but development that protects the marine environment and enables the sustainable use of natural resources.

This is precisely why the BEYOND project approaches offshore wind farms from a completely new perspective. Rather than serving solely for electricity generation, the project explores how offshore wind farms can become part of a broader system that simultaneously contributes to the preservation of marine ecosystems, the development of the blue economy, and the creation of new opportunities for local communities.

Through the cooperation of Croatian and Italian partners, models are being developed to support the future planning of sustainable offshore wind farms in the Adriatic, while taking into account the interests of the scientific community, businesses, the public sector, and citizens.
