17/07/2026

The ARCHAEODIGIT project is pleased to announce the release of the third episode of its podcast series, "Digging Digital: the ARCHAEODIGIT Podcast." Developed within the framework of the project's training and communication activities, the series explores innovative approaches to the valorisation of archaeological heritage through digital skills, communication, and audience engagement.

Following the thematic structure of the ARCHAEODIGIT Joint Training Courses, the podcast series brings together experts and practitioners to discuss key topics related to the digital transformation of archaeology and cultural heritage. Through conversations and practical examples, the series provides valuable insights for cultural heritage professionals, tourism operators, researchers, students, public authorities, and anyone interested in making archaeological heritage more accessible, engaging, and sustainable.

Episode 3: Merging the Tangible and Intangible

The third episode continues the journey through Module 1 – Storytelling in the Valorisation of Archaeological Heritage, exploring how archaeological sites can create richer and more meaningful visitor experiences by connecting tangible heritage with the intangible traditions that surround it.

Hosted by Izabela del Vechio, Head of the Department for Science, Technology and Entrepreneurship of UNIPU, the episode features Prof. Mauro Dujmović, Full Professor at Juraj Dobrila University of Pula (UNIPU), who discusses how archaeology can move beyond the presentation of physical remains to embrace local identity, collective memory, folklore, gastronomy, and storytelling.

The conversation highlights how archaeological heritage becomes more engaging when visitors are invited to experience not only monuments and artefacts but also the traditions, legends, and cultural practices that give places their unique character. Rather than viewing archaeological sites as isolated remnants of the past, the episode demonstrates how they can become living cultural landscapes where history is experienced through stories, emotions, and human connections.

Listeners will discover how local myths, legends, oral traditions, and culinary heritage can be integrated into archaeological interpretation to create authentic and immersive visitor experiences. Practical examples, including initiatives such as Istra Inspirit and Pompeii, illustrate how theatrical performances, interactive storytelling, and community participation successfully bring history to life while strengthening local identity and enhancing cultural tourism.

The discussion also addresses the growing role of digital technologies in heritage interpretation. While digital tools can significantly enrich visitor engagement, the episode emphasises that technology should complement - not replace - the human dimension of storytelling. Achieving the right balance between innovation and authentic personal interpretation remains essential for creating memorable and meaningful cultural experiences.

Continuing the journey through digital archaeology

"Digging Digital: the ARCHAEODIGIT Podcast" consists of 20 episodes, organised into thematic modules reflecting the project's training programme. The podcast series represents another step in ARCHAEODIGIT's commitment to strengthening the skills of professionals working in archaeology and cultural heritage while encouraging collaboration and knowledge exchange among institutions, researchers, tourism stakeholders, public authorities, and local communities.
