From 15 to 19 June 2026, the Blue Skills Summer School took place in Trieste, organised by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS). The five-day programme brought together students, young researchers and experts to strengthen knowledge and skills needed for the sustainable development of the blue economy in the Mediterranean.
The programme addressed some of today's most pressing marine challenges, including climate change, marine pollution, biodiversity conservation, sustainable coastal development, and the ecological and digital transition. Participants also explored the role of offshore renewable energy and marine conservation in shaping resilient coastal communities.
The Summer School was jointly delivered through the cooperation of two Interreg Italy–Croatia initiatives, combining complementary expertise in marine environmental protection, blue economy skills development, and offshore renewable energy.
Throughout the week, participants attended expert lectures, analysed real-life case studies, collaborated in interdisciplinary working groups, and took part in practical field activities. A highlight of the programme was the field visit to a Marine Protected Area, where participants gained first-hand insight into ecosystem conservation and sustainable tourism practices, demonstrating how environmental protection and economic activities can successfully coexist.
By combining education, research, and practical experience, the Summer School contributed to developing the competencies required for emerging blue economy sectors while promoting innovation, cross-border cooperation, and a more sustainable future for the Adriatic and Mediterranean regions.
