Night of Fortress 2026 in the City of Korčula

21/05/2026

The City of Korčula once again took part in Night of Fortresses Goes Green, an international event dedicated to connecting cultural heritage, sustainable tourism, and the preservation of fortified heritage.

Held on 8 and 9 May 2026 in the historic Old Town of Korčula, the two-day programme brought together numerous visitors who had the opportunity to explore the city’s rich defensive history through a variety of cultural and educational activities. Visitor feedback were exceptionally positive, with many highlighting the atmosphere of the historic spaces and the innovative interpretation of local heritage.

As part of the programme, the City Museum Korčula presented the exhibition “Korčula in the Past”, an open-air display featuring reproductions of early 20th-century postcards placed throughout the streets of the Old Town. Mounted on textile installations, the exhibition transformed public space into a unique outdoor gallery accessible to residents and visitors.

A particularly memorable part of the programme took place at Revelin Tower through the project “Moreška – Love and War”, where the historic fortification space became the setting for a multimedia interpretation of one of Korčula’s most important traditions. Through contemporary audiovisual storytelling, visitors entered the narrative of the battle between the Black and Red armies, with the character of Bula at the centre of the story.

For the first time, Revelin Tower hosted this type of immersive multimedia content, including large-scale video projections mapped directly onto the textured stone relief of the historic walls. The combination of light, sound, architecture, and interpretation created a completely new visitor experience within the fortification space and demonstrated the potential of innovative cultural presentation in heritage sites.

The event was organized within the framework of the FORTIC project – From remains Of the war to the aRchiTecture of peace in the cross-border area of Italy-Croatia – whose aim is to strengthen the role of Adriatic cross-border cultural heritage through the recognition and promotion of best practices in fortified heritage management.

FORTIC is part of the EU Interreg Italy–Croatia 2021–2027 Programme, which prioritizes culture and sustainable tourism as drivers of economic growth, social inclusion, and innovation.
