On April 14, 2026, the Third Regional Lab and Conference of the European BEYOND project took place at the headquarters of the Apulia Region in Bari, under the title “Offshore wind in Apulia: planning, impacts and sustainable development perspectives.” The event served as a platform for discussion and co-design among institutions, research organizations, companies, and stakeholders, with the aim of developing sustainable models for offshore wind in the Adriatic region.
The opening session presented the progress of the BEYOND project and its role in strengthening the knowledge base to support informed public decision-making. The first session highlighted key technical and scientific results from Italian partners, including ecosystem models to assess the impact of offshore wind on biodiversity and marine environments, emerging employment opportunities within the blue economy, and innovative cost-benefit analysis methods that incorporate environmental, social, and territorial impacts.
Particular attention was given to the coexistence of offshore wind and marine ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of science-based decision-making and continuous environmental monitoring. It was also noted that existing data on Apulian seabeds represent a valuable resource for future planning.
The event further explored industrial and strategic aspects of the sector, including the technological and financial complexity of offshore wind projects, the need for supportive policy frameworks, and the importance of integrating research, industry, and infrastructure. Updated data on renewable energy development in Southern Italy confirmed Apulia’s key role in the national energy system, while the offshore wind farm in Taranto was presented as a pilot project for innovation, environmental monitoring, and local supply chain involvement.
The final roundtable reaffirmed offshore wind as a key driver of sustainable development, highlighting the need for integrated planning, targeted investments, and strong stakeholder engagement. The Apulia Region also confirmed its commitment to continuing the BEYOND project and promoting a development model that combines energy transition, environmental protection, and economic growth.
