Trieste Hosts a Successful Training on Inclusive Tourism

On 23 March 2026, the SITE Training on Inclusive Tourism brought together professionals, institutions, experts and stakeholders in Trieste for a full day dedicated to accessibility, inclusion and Universal Design in tourism.

Hosted at the San Giovanni Campus of the University of Trieste, the event offered a valuable opportunity to explore how tourism destinations, services and infrastructures can become more inclusive, welcoming and responsive to diverse needs.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in discussions, practical reflections and knowledge exchange around one key question: how can tourism become truly accessible for all?

A day of learning, exchange and inspiration

The training was met with strong interest and active participation, confirming the growing relevance of inclusive tourism across the sector. The event brought together a wide range of perspectives, including tourism professionals, public authorities, service providers, destination managers and other stakeholders committed to improving the accessibility and quality of visitor experiences.

More than just a training session, the event became a space for dialogue and shared learning — a moment to connect ideas, practices and experiences around a common goal: building destinations that leave no one behind.

From Universal Design to practical tourism solutions

The programme explored several key dimensions of inclusive tourism, with a particular focus on how the principles of Universal Design can be applied in practice.

During the training, participants had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of topics such as:

- the principles of Universal Design
- accessible and inclusive tourism terminology
- the importance of accessible information for different target groups
- easy language and inclusive communication
- web accessibility and digital inclusion
- accessibility and inclusion in transport
- accessibility in hospitality services
- accessibility and inclusion in natural and cultural attractions
- destination-level approaches to inclusive tourism planning

These themes were addressed through presentations, examples and reflections that highlighted how accessibility is not a niche issue, but a fundamental component of better tourism experiences for everyone.

Training materials to support continued learning

One of the key outcomes of the event is the value of the training materials, which help extend the impact of the day beyond the event itself.

The presentations and supporting content shared during the training provide useful insights and practical knowledge for those working in tourism, destination management, public services, communication and visitor experience design. They represent an important resource for anyone interested in understanding how inclusion and accessibility can be integrated more effectively into tourism policies, services and environments.
