Smarter Anchoring in the Pakleni Islands

01/04/2026

At the Pakleni Island Committee meeting in Hvar, at the end of March 2026, the results of the Interreg BIOPRESSADRIA project—focused on improving nautical tourism management—were officially presented, marking an important milestone for the protection of one of the Adriatic’s most treasured marine areas.
Our project partners Sunce and Sea and Karst participated in the meeting.

A key outcome of the meeting was the adoption of a proposal for the arrangement of vessels at nautical anchorages. This decision represents a crucial prerequisite for the development of detailed design solutions aimed at regulating anchoring practices and reducing environmental impact.
The Pakleni Islands, located just off the southwest coast of Hvar, are part of the Natura 2000 ecological network and host valuable marine habitats, including Posidonia seagrass meadows, reefs, sandbanks, and submerged sea caves. These ecosystems are particularly sensitive to damage caused by uncontrolled anchoring.

Through the BIOPRESSADRIA project, partners are working to introduce more sustainable solutions, such as eco-friendly mooring systems and improved spatial planning for nautical tourism. These actions aim to balance the growing popularity of the area among sailors with the urgent need to preserve its natural beauty and biodiversity.

By promoting responsible boating practices and smarter anchorage management, Hvar and the Pakleni Islands are setting a model for sustainable tourism in the Adriatic—ensuring that these pristine waters can be enjoyed for generations to come.
