As part of the Interreg Italy–Croatia CYROS project, a series of round tables recently brought together key representatives from Digitalisation, Infrastructure, Transport Systems, and Tourism of the Marche Region. The central goal is to transform the region from a mere transit point into a premier destination for sustainable cycle tourism.
The Port of Ancona as a Strategic Hub
The discussions highlighted the Port of Ancona’s vital role in Adriatic mobility. While current Italy–Croatia ferry services are already bicycle-friendly, stakeholders emphasized the need to bridge the gap in land-sea intermodality. Proposed improvements include coordinated timetables, e-bike charging stations at port facilities, secure racks, and simplified boarding procedures to ensure a seamless transition for travelers.
Innovation through the CYROS App
To support this vision, a new digital application is under development. Built on OpenStreetMap data and integrated with the Marche Outdoor platform, the app will offer validated GPX tracks, cycling-friendly accommodation info, and real-time intermodal connections. While regional trains already provide effective bike transport, the project aims to improve bus reliability to create a truly integrated network.
Governance and Cross-Border Cooperation
A permanent technical working group was recommended to ensure long-term data governance and alignment between Italian and Croatian partners. To put these strategies to the test, a Study Bike Tour will be organized to evaluate routes and services on the ground, strengthening the engagement of all regional stakeholders.
