The BlueDiversity project marks a significant step forward in safeguarding the Adriatic ecosystem with the publication of the Blue Crab Trap Report, which focuses on innovative capture techniques, behavioral analysis, and LED-based solutions to manage the spread of the invasive blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), a species that poses a serious threat to coastal ecosystems, fisheries, and marine biodiversity.
The document was prepared by Blu Marine Service (Project Partner 6) following a comprehensive market analysis of the most effective traps currently available for blue crab capture. All selected equipment was tested across different environments within the PP6 pilot area between June and December 2024. The traps were evacuate according to the following criteria:
- capture capacity;
- ease of use and storage;
- structural resistance;
- versatility across different marine environments.
To further assess the effectiveness of trap entrance designs, additional trials were conducted in a controlled environment. These tests examined the animal’s movements during entry into the traps, providing valuable insights into behavioral patterns.
Moreover, video recordings were collected to analyze the blue crab’s behavior inside the traps when different types of bait were used. This material proved essential for defining a standardized monitoring protocol and for verifying interactions between the blue crab and other marine species within the traps.
Overall, the Blue Crab Trap Report provides a scientific and operational foundation for improving invasive species management strategies in the Adriatic Sea, reinforcing BlueDiversity’s commitment to marine biodiversity protection.
