The SWAMrisk project addresses the complex phenomenon of saltwater intrusion into agricultural areas through scientific research, numerical modelling and continuous monitoring of surface and groundwater. While the processes behind saltwater intrusion are scientifically complex, their impacts are often visible even to the naked eye – in damaged crops, degraded soil and reduced water quality. Because these impacts are already affecting local communities and food production, early action and clear understanding are essential. For this reason, SWAMrisk has prepared a special article that explains the project’s central challenge and activities in a way that is accessible to the wider public.

The storytelling article presents:

  • what saltwater intrusion is and why it is becoming more frequent and severe,

  • how it threatens agriculture, freshwater resources and natural ecosystems,

  • and how the SWAMrisk project is responding through monitoring, data collection, modelling and practical solutions for local communities and decision-makers.

Through real-life examples from Croatia and Italy, the article shows how climate change, droughts and rising sea levels are already affecting fertile agricultural areas and livelihoods. At the same time, it highlights the key activities and expected results of the SWAMrisk project in protecting freshwater resources and strengthening climate resilience.

The full story is available as an attachment to this news post. We invite all readers to explore it and learn more about how SWAMrisk is transforming scientific knowledge into practical action.
