PED – Positive Energy Destinations

Project proposal

Tourism remains one of the main economic drivers in the Adriatic-Ionian macroregion. Yet, its environmental and social sustainability is under threat. According to UNWTO, over 1.3 billion people travelled globally in 2023, with coastal areas experiencing the heaviest seasonal pressures. The Italian-Croatian cross-border region is particularly affected by: ● seasonal peaks in energy consumption ● localised pollution and resource waste ● lack of incentives for responsible tourism ● increasing disconnect between communities and tourism development The PED project addresses this need by developing through bottom up, participatory approach a crossborder platform combining real-time environmental data, artificial intelligence (AI), gamification, and community energy engagement. The project aims to support inclusive destination management, green transition, and public-private innovation. General Objective: To position Italian and Croatian destinations as positive energy pioneers by integrating digital innovation, AI, and citizen participation in sustainable tourism governance. Specific Objectives: ● To co-design and prototype a real-time platform for monitoring and visualising environmental, social and energy-related data in touristic areas ● To test participatory incentives (gamified community energy credits) that encourage responsible behaviour by citizens and tourists ● To strengthen cross-border cooperation and public-private alliances for sustainable destination management ● To promote a replicable model of "Destination with a Purpose" through international communication and storytelling ● To enable Adriatic destinations to become frontrunners in inclusive and climate-friendly tourism PROJECT DURATION: 15 months -18 months
