Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) is a public company in the form of a joint-stock company with the function of manager of the national railway infrastructure, 100% owned by Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane. The main areas of activity concern: - the safe management of railway traffic, also through the monitoring of train control and command systems; - the maintenance of the efficiency of the national railway infrastructure for its full usability by Transport Companies, through ordinary and extraordinary maintenance activities, since 2014 governed by the "Programme Contract - Services Part" signed between RFI, in its capacity as Manager of the national railway infrastructure, and the State; - the planning and implementation of investments for the enhancement of the existing infrastructure and its technological equipment as well as for the development and construction, also through the participating companies, of new railway lines and facilities - the annual definition of the railway timetable on the basis of the requests made by the Passenger and Freight Railway Companies - the assessment of the psycho-physical suitability of the personnel - both its own and those of the railway companies and other operators in the transport sector - engaged in activities connected with the safety of train circulation and railway operations - the accessibility of the stations and the services offered therein to travellers - assistance in the station to Persons with Reduced Mobility - the usability of the owned freight terminals - the maritime connection to guarantee the territorial continuity of railway services to Sicily - the integration of the Italian network into the trans-European transport networks. RFI promotes projects shared with the territory, involving citizens, associations and local authorities, to create synergies aimed at the sustainable development of communities. In collaboration with the FS Foundation, RFI has reactivated some railway lines for exclusively tourist use, and has created railway museums, dedicated to the historical and philological enhancement of the territories involved. RFI offers a concrete opportunity to create a network of active and sustainable transport, promoting solutions that favor more environmentally friendly travel and improve the quality of life in the territories.
