Strengthening skills for the future of carbon farming

Building a reliable voluntary carbon market requires more than innovative tools—it also depends on the knowledge and skills of the people who will make it work. Throughout the GECO 2.2 project, an extensive programme of technical training activities equipped farmers, advisors, researchers, public authorities and businesses with the expertise needed to support the transition towards carbon farming and voluntary carbon markets.
Between September 2025 and July 2026, the project organised more than 30 training and engagement activities across Italy and Croatia, including online seminars, workshops, technical demonstrations and practical sessions. Participants explored the principles of carbon farming, regenerative agriculture, carbon quantification methodologies, certification systems and the innovative digital tools developed by GECO 2.2, including blockchain-based solutions for carbon credit traceability.
The training programme brought together a wide range of stakeholders—from farmers, agronomists and consultants to researchers, certification experts, IT developers, public institutions and potential carbon credit buyers—creating valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange and cross-border cooperation. These activities helped build a shared understanding of how voluntary carbon markets can generate both environmental and economic benefits for the agricultural sector.
Participants expressed strong interest in the project's Carbon Calculator, certification procedures and the opportunities offered by carbon farming as a new source of value for agriculture. By combining scientific knowledge with practical applications, the training activities prepared stakeholders for the implementation of the GECO 2.2 pilot actions and contributed to strengthening the technical capacity needed to support future regional carbon markets.
