Two batane return to the water in Novigrad
03/07/2026
On Monday, 29 June, Novigrad’s Mandrač witnessed the ceremonial launch of two batane, traditional boats deeply rooted in the local maritime heritage.
Among the speakers were Novigrad’s mayor Ante Milos, Dr. Boris Sabatti, Director of the Istrian Development Agency – IDA d.o.o., and Luciano Beg from Marservis d.o.o., alongside representatives of Croatian and Italian project partners. The ceremony was further enriched by the presence of local fishermen and Slobodan Simić Sime, creator of the historic Novigrad batana exhibited at the Visitor Centre.
The two vessels, launched by the MARSERVIS d.o.o. shipyard, represent a dialogue between past and present. One is a traditional wooden batana restored using natural materials such as linen, while the other is a modern replica built with contemporary techniques.
As highlighted during the event, the batana represents a bridge between generations. Once essential to everyday life, it now offers new opportunities for cultural valorisation, sustainable tourism and the revival of traditional skills.
A living heritage shaping future tourism
Following the launch, the batane sailed across the waters of Novigrad, accompanied by local fishermen who brought the Mandrač to life through rowing, recreating the spirit of the past.
As part of Novigrad’s maritime heritage, the batane carries strong educational potential, offering younger generations the opportunity to learn about life by the sea and traditional craftsmanship. At the same time, it contributes to the development of a more authentic and sustainable tourism offer.
Thanks to TOFOLA project support, the Centre has also been enhanced with a new interactive screen featuring a 3D model of the original boat, further enriching the visitor experience.
