Shaping the next generation of location scouts: the REEL Location Scouting Training in Rijeka

On 19 February 2025, the city of Rijeka hosted the launch of the three-day cross-border training course for the selected twelve young and aspiring location scouting operators from Croatia and Italy, organized by Art-kino.
The programme, running until 21 February, was delivered under the expert guidance of Croatian location managers Tomislav Peleski and Dean Lalić, alongside guest lecturers and professionals from the audiovisual sector. The main objective was to equip participants with practical and professional skills in location scouting, with particular emphasis on destination management, logistics, sustainability and legal aspects - all essential components of one of the most dynamic roles in film production and destination promotion.
Welcomed by Slobodanka Mišković, Director of Art-kino, throughout the three days, participants engage in field exercises from Rijeka to Brseč, interactive workshops and creative group work, gaining hands-on experience while building professional portfolios and cross-border networks in a real-life learning environment.
The first day also featured a presentation by Tanja Ladović Blažević, Head of the Filming in Croatia Department at the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, who introduced the national incentive programme for film and television productions shooting in Croatia, while underlining the need for new generations of location managers to support the continued growth of filming activity in the country.
Additional guest lecturers included producer Nebojša Taraba and unit production manager Ivona Maras, who shared practical insights from their filming projects in Rijeka and the surrounding area, discussing real production challenges and solutions. Their contributions offered participants a comprehensive view of the strategic role that locations play in audiovisual production.
