D.4.2.2 Definition of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool to estimate traffic flows in a specific area

The idea behind AI tool was born from the need to simplify and automatize the traffic flow data collection, which often requires relatively high-cost technologies (traffic radars, dedicated sensors, etc.) or a high number of people spending a lot of time to collect the required data along the roads.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool is based on computer vision to estimate traffic flows in a specific area. It intends to monitor both vehicles (private and public) and person’s flows. The collected data intends to provide an innovative technological tool able to provide, in an easier and more cost-efficient way, traffic data for mobility planning and management. The solution was designed in order to be replicable in others contexts.
