New electric shuttle brings sustainable mobility solutions to the streets of Labin

A new electric shuttle is now operating in the City of Labin as part of the project SUMMA, implemented within the Interreg Italy–Croatia 2021–2027 Programme.
The electric vehicle was procured by IRENA – Istrian Regional Energy Agency, a SUMMA project partner, in cooperation with the City of Labin and the municipal company LABIN 2000.
The new shuttle complements the existing Karocela service, connecting the parking area near the city cemetery with Titov trg in Labin Old Town. The service provides residents and visitors with a simple, free and more sustainable alternative for reaching the historic city centre without using a private car.
Labin as a SUMMA pilot area
Labin is one of the pilot areas of the SUMMA project, where IRENA's activities focus on developing and testing sustainable mobility solutions and reducing traffic pressure, particularly in and around the Old Town.
SUMMA aims to develop and enhance sustainable, climate-resilient, intelligent and intermodal mobility across the Italian and Croatian Adriatic coastal and hinterland areas. Through pilot activities implemented in different partner territories, the project tests practical solutions designed to improve transport connectivity, encourage the use of sustainable transport modes and reduce dependence on private cars.
The introduction of the electric shuttle represents an important step from planning towards the practical implementation and testing of sustainable mobility solutions in real-life conditions. The experience gained through its operation will provide valuable input for the future development of mobility services in Labin and the wider Labin area.
Supporting future sustainable mobility planning
In addition to the electric shuttle, IRENA has developed two studies within the SUMMA pilot activities aimed at improving transport connectivity in Labin and its surrounding area.
The first study examines opportunities for improving connections between Labin Old Town and Podlabin, while the second analyses potential solutions for connecting the City of Labin with neighbouring municipalities through public transport.
Together, these activities combine a concrete pilot investment with strategic planning for future mobility solutions. By testing an electric public transport service while simultaneously examining opportunities for improving connections across the wider territory, SUMMA is helping establish a basis for more accessible, efficient and sustainable mobility in the Labin area.
The Labin pilot demonstrates how locally tailored solutions can contribute to the wider SUMMA objective of improving multimodal connectivity and promoting more sustainable transport across the Italy–Croatia Programme area.
