Introduction

The Interreg Mediterranean Multi-Programme Mechanism (MMM) is a pilot coordination project involving several Interreg programmes in the Mediterranean area on the topic of sustainable tourism, aimed at strengthening their synergies with a twofold objective:

  • Improve coordination in tracking and evaluating the impact of successful practices and innovative solutions tested locally. This helps create connections between projects, making it easier to transfer, expand, and integrate effective solutions;
  • Strengthen policy recommendations under Interreg to maximize the long-term impact and sustainability of investments in different regions. This includes improving project quality and sharing valuable knowledge, particularly on sustainable tourism.

About the MMM

The Mediterranean Multi-Programme Mechanism (MMM) was launched with the initial contribution of three Interreg Programmes - Italy–France Maritime, MED/Euro-MED, and ENI-MED/NEXT MED - which initiated a two-year experimental phase in 2022–2023 to explore new ways of cooperating across the Mediterranean.

In 2023, the Mechanism significantly expanded with the official entry of Interreg Italy–Croatia, Interreg Greece–Cyprus, Interreg Italy–Malta, and Interreg Italy–Tunisia, all of which actively contributed to shaping the joint action plan and strengthening the Mechanism’s shared vision.

In 2025, further three programmes joined the MMM, further enriching this collaborative effort with new perspectives and territories: Interreg Italy–Slovenia, Interreg IPA South Adriatic and Interreg ADRION.

What the Programmes involved in the Mechanism agreed to work on:

  • set common goals and carry out joint activities, such as joint monitoring actions and defining
  • shared methodologies for identifying and reusing project results;
  • promote a coordinated approach to communication in the Mediterranean area to ensure
  • better communication with beneficiaries or applicants from the region;
  • develop joint actions to transfer individual solutions, maximizing their capitalisation
  • and facilitating the integration of results;
  • provide shared responses to common challenges, such as coordinated calls for proposals;
  • open up and expand external dialogue to engage new stakeholders and the European Commission, promoting the solutions introduced for the benefit of the territories.
