Noise Cleanup: Boaters as allies against underwater noise pollution

Call for Young Volunteers: Apply as IVY for the project UNDERSEA

UNDERSEA team is seeking an IVY Project Partner to support communication and event activities in Riccione, Italy. This five-month volunteering opportunity offers young people aged 18–30 the chance to gain hands-on experience in European cooperation while contributing to the protection of the Adriatic Sea through awareness-raising and project outreach.

Deep Listening: Exploring the Depths of the Adriatic.

The Adriatic Sea hosts a complex underwater soundscape shaped by biological, natural and anthropogenic sources. Increasing human-generated noise poses a growing threat to marine organisms that rely on sound for communication, orientation and survival, making bioacoustics a key tool for ecosystem assessment and conservation. This article outlines over two decades of marine bioacoustic research in the Adriatic, focusing on the Interreg Italy–Croatia projects SOUNDSCAPE and UNDERSEA. Using long-term passive acoustic monitoring, these initiatives document marine biodiversity, assess underwater noise and support the creation of a reference library of cetacean vocalisations, providing essential data for research, management and conservation.

First Noise Cleanup training event in Trieste

On October 9, 2025, at Generali Convention Center in Trieste, the UNDERSEA (UNDerwatER Soundscape bEyond Ais) project participated in the Barcolana Sea Summit with the event "Noise Cleanup Training - The problem of underwater noise and shared strategies for a healthy marine environment" and presented the new project app.

New Acoustic Monitoring Deployment – Southern Koločep (Dubrovnik)

The new deployment in Southern Koločep (Dubrovnik) will provide critical data on anthropogenic noise levels in this part of the Adriatic Sea, contributing to a broader understanding of spatial and temporal patterns of underwater noise pollution.
