27/10/2025

On October 9, 2025, the UNDERSEA Project (UNDerwatER Soundscape bEyond Ais) took part in the Barcolana Sea Summit with the panel “Noise Cleanup Training Event – The Issue of Underwater Noise and Shared Strategies for a Healthy Marine Environment.”

The event, held at the Generali Convention Centre, Sala Illy (Trieste), was organized by ARPA FVG in collaboration with CNR ISMAR within the framework of the Interreg Italy–Croatia Programme. Its goal was to strengthen awareness, monitoring capacity, and mitigation strategies regarding anthropogenic underwater noise in the Adriatic Sea.

  • Antonio Codarin (ARPA FVG) opened the session with an overview of underwater acoustic monitoring in the Gulf of Trieste, describing the main sources of anthropogenic noise, monitoring methodologies, and ongoing mitigation activities.
  • Marta Picciulin (CNR ISMAR) presented the objectives and interdisciplinary approach of the UNDERSEA project, which combines scientific research, environmental monitoring, technological innovation, and institutional cooperation.
  • Michol Ghezzo (CNR ISMAR) introduced a new citizen science mobile app designed to estimate recreational boating traffic and assess its potential impact on marine biodiversity, promoting active public involvement in sustainable marine management.

The Noise Cleanup Training Event successfully engaged key stakeholders, fostering dialogue and collaboration among research institutions, environmental agencies, and citizens. The initiative highlighted the importance of joint efforts to understand and mitigate underwater noise, contributing to the protection and sustainable use of the Adriatic Sea.

Through this event, UNDERSEA reaffirmed its commitment to scientific innovation, environmental awareness, and cross-border cooperation for a healthier marine ecosystem.
