Project specific objectives

To set up relevant eco system monitoring and characterization of multilayered coastal aquifer systems.

To develop a joint web-based “Hydro-cloud” (virtual web-based laboratory tool) to prevent climate change negative effects in costal systems.

To ensure the strengthening of the capacity to mitigate negative effects induced by climate change droughts in coastal areas

To produce plans with guidelines and recommendations to reduce climate change negative impacts on the coastal systems, thereby improving the resilience of coastal communities, ecosystems, and agricultural lands to climate changes.

About

SWAMrisk focuses on addressing climate-induced droughts affecting crowded coastal areas of the Adriatic Sea, crucial for sustainable agriculture reliant on water availability and quality. Climate predictions highlight challenges like sea-level rise, reduced precipitation, higher temperatures, altered hydrological regimes, and changing Adriatic Sea properties. 

The project targets resilience and adaptation of coastal ecosystems through enhanced climate awareness and adaptation efforts. It focuses on two study areas; one in Italy (Venice Lagoon to Po River delta) and one in Croatia (Neretva River delta); vulnerable to droughts and saltwater intrusion. 

SWAMrisk aims to develop a "Hydro-cloud" database for comprehensive data sharing, novel risk assessment methods through field investigations and modeling, and climate adaptation plans. Short-term goals include operational water guidelines, while long-term plans address climate impacts, water demand projections, and sustainable groundwater use.
