How can Adriatic destinations reduce summer traffic pressure?
12/05/2026
Every summer, Adriatic destinations face increasing traffic pressure caused by high tourist flows and the growing dependence on private car transport. Congestion in urban areas, overloaded access roads, and limited connections between ports, airports, railways, and local public transport represent common challenges across the Italy–Croatia programme area.
Through the SUMMA project, project partners are jointly working on the development of smarter and more sustainable mobility solutions aimed at improving multimodal connectivity between coastal and hinterland areas while reducing traffic congestion during the tourist season.
The project brings together partners from Italy and Croatia to exchange experiences, analyse existing transport systems, and develop pilot actions adapted to local needs and territorial characteristics. Activities focus on strengthening connections between different transport modes, promoting sustainable mobility alternatives, and improving accessibility for both residents and visitors.
Several pilot activities are currently being developed within the project. In Istria, activities focus on analysing and proposing sustainable public transport solutions connecting coastal and inland areas, while other project partners are working on cycling infrastructure, intermodal hubs, digital mobility tools, and improved passenger connections between ports, airports, and urban transport systems.
In addition to infrastructure and technical solutions, SUMMA places strong emphasis on stakeholder involvement and participatory processes, recognising that sustainable mobility planning requires cooperation between public authorities, transport providers, experts, and local communities.
By encouraging integrated and sustainable transport solutions, the SUMMA project aims to contribute to a more connected, accessible, and environmentally responsible Adriatic region.
