Feasibility study confirms the sustainability of connecting Split Airport and Resnik Port – concrete solutions for sustainable mobility in Dalmatia

01/10/2025

At the meeting of the Mobility Committee of Split-Dalmatia County, a Feasibility Study for the connection between Split Airport (Sv. Jeronim) and the passenger terminal of Resnik Port was presented. The study was developed within the framework of the SUMMA project – Sustainable Multimodal Mobility in the Adriatic Costal and Hinterland Areas, co-financed by the Interreg Italy–Croatia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme.

The study focuses on creating a transport model that will improve traffic flow and accessibility for local residents and tourists, reduce congestion on key road routes towards Split, cut greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, and ensure integration into the EU’s TEN-T transport network.

The results demonstrate that the project can significantly enhance transport accessibility and sustainable mobility across the region, providing a comprehensive technical, transport, environmental, and economic framework for identifying and evaluating possible solutions. Four concrete options have been proposed:

  • Reconstruction of the existing Put Divulja road, including the introduction of pedestrian and cycling lanes and electric shuttle vehicles,
  • Construction of a new one-way multimodal road designed for the integration of public transport,
  • Integrated maritime–land corridor “Resnik – St. Jeronim”, with the introduction of a regular catamaran line connecting the airport with Resnik Port and the cities of Split and Omiš,
  • Integration with the railway network, including the possibility of connecting to future urban and regional rail lines.

The implementation of these solutions would enable:

  • faster passenger transfer between the airport and Resnik Port (6–10 minutes instead of the current 20–30 minutes by car),
  • reduced traffic load on the Adriatic Highway,
  • lower CO₂ emissions thanks to electric vehicles and coastal shipping,
  • improved island–mainland connectivity,
  • enhanced safety and quality of life for residents and visitors.

The Feasibility Study provides an expert and strategically aligned basis for making a decision on establishing a permanent and functional transport link between two key nodes of Split’s transport hub – Resnik Port and Split Airport. It contributes to the rationalisation of the County’s transport system, supports the green transition, and strengthens the vision of Dalmatia as a region of connected, accessible and environmentally efficient mobility.
