Published on 14/09/2020 (last modified 16/09/2021)

What would someone do if they had an old bunker on their property? We found the answer to that question just above the city of Zadar, where Robert Kralj, owner of the company King, rents buggies for tourist routes while taking care of big underground bunker. He has big plans for this bunker, which requires large investments for restoration and needs a lot of cleaning up the trash that filled its whole drainage system, secondary exits and two domes. In terms of content, Kralj revealed that he wants to put history in the focus, because many tourists already showed an interest in wartime heritage, so he wants to give them first-hand experience with the use of old photos, multimedia, background sounds, weapon replicas and other props that could intensify the feeling of old, war times.

What kind of new purpose could some wartime heritage object get if it was on someone’s private property? Perfect example of that we found just above city of Zadar, where Robert Kralj, owner of the company King, rents buggies for tourist routes while taking care of old underground bunker. He has big plans for this bunker and although he has great idea of how to revive it, he emphasizes that this project requires large investments and a lot of cleaning up.

- I think that we should offer informative content, in terms of history and culture. Because that is most important in the whole story. The tourists already showed interest for wartime heritage, so we could show them that part of history, because surely the majority of them didn't had the opportunity to visit such objects and experience them first-hand. In addition, one can here also see the quality of construction and technologies that were used to build the bunker – revealed Robert Kralj, whose bunker has two big rooms, few smaller ones, a toilet, one main entrance and two secondary exits, as well as two big domes.

- I would like that with the entry in this object, everyone could experience the feeling of staying in such bunker in old times. This could be achieved with photographs from that period and with some background sounds, which could additionally intensify that impression, and of course, some props would help. From old uniforms and wartime stretchers, to replica weapons and other props, so that the visitors could experience the object like in old times – explained Kralj, again adding that in order to put this fortification in function, a lot of cleaning up awaits, because there’s a lot of trash in the whole drainage channel system, in the emergency exits and in the domes.

- Since there are no plans and drafts of these fortification, I believe there are some more objects that are buried, while maybe there are some tunnels to the next bunkers – reminded Robert Kralj, concluding that new findings could only be discovered through the process of cleaning up and restoration.
