About section
About
Ports play a crucial role in logistics and supply chain management, enabling accessibility to key resources in terms of energy, health, jobs, passenger mobility and accessibility, especially when it comes to the land-locked or island regions, as well as providing safety and security. Irrespective of their size and location, ports always serve as gateways and act as catalysts of economic growth and social interactions, paving the way for regional economic development and social inclusion.
However, like any human activity, port operations also have an impact on air quality and greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change, as well as on local communities, since ports in Italy and Croatia are surrounded by residential areas and are located inside their cities.
Also, today ports are being challenged, in terms of showcasing both environmental credentials, security and policy conformity as well as policy compliance. Indeed, sustainability and digitalisation are closely intertwined, requiring strong synergies between them through the so-called “twin transition”. In certain sectors, this transformative synergy has already taken place, and ports will need rapid scaling, development and deployment of digital solutions to undergo their green transformation.
