MEMORY ESCAPE: Co-Design Workshops Successfully Held in Bertinoro and Labin
04/06/2026
The first co-design workshops of the MEMORY ESCAPE project were successfully held in Bertinoro (Italy) and Labin (Croatia), involving young participants, experts, facilitators and project partners in a collaborative process focused on dissonant heritage, storytelling and gamification.
MEMORY ESCAPE is a cross-border project funded by the Interreg Italy–Croatia Programme, aiming to develop innovative “phygital” escape room experiences that combine physical heritage sites with digital and interactive tools to engage young people with complex historical narratives.
In Bertinoro, the co-design process involved a group of 20 young participants and was organised through four workshops held at the GIB’S in Fratta Terme on 28 April, 30 April, 5 May and 7 May 2026. Divided into small groups and guided by four facilitators — Cristina Lentini and Tommaso Di Nicola (Deina APS), Marcello Di Camillo and Giorgia Nanni (Casa del Cuculo Società Cooperativa) — participants took part in brainstorming activities, discussion groups and collaborative work sessions aimed at designing the Bertinoro Memory Escape experience.
The workshops focused on the creation of an engaging narrative connecting past and present and guiding players through the discovery of Bertinoro’s dissonant heritage. Participants also worked on clues, puzzle logic and interactive elements linked to the Terme della Fratta, the Casa del Fascio and the Colonna dell’Ospitalità.
In Labin, 20 students from Mate Blažina Secondary School, together with Erasmus students from Sicily, participated in a four-day workshop programme focused on the mining heritage of Labin and Raša and its connection with dissonant heritage and the ATRIUM Cultural Route. Together with teachers, experts and project partners, participants collaborated on the development of escape room narratives, puzzles, digital interactions and multimedia elements for the future “phygital” experience.
Special emphasis was placed on research, co-creation and active participation, encouraging young people to contribute directly to the development of storylines and interactive content.
The workshops represent an important milestone for the MEMORY ESCAPE project, strengthening cooperation between Italy and Croatia and contributing to the creation of innovative educational tools promoting dialogue, cultural awareness and European democratic values.
The project partnership includes the Municipality of Labin as Lead Partner, the Municipality of Bertinoro, the ATRIUM Cultural Route and KALIMERA.
