Welcome to the latest update from the BRAVE project! As autumn brings a cooler, more reflective mood to our shared coastlines, our 5th newsletter dives deep into the intricate connection between scientific monitoring, cultural heritage, and cross-border cooperation.
🌊 Writing from Friuli Venezia Giulia: Where Mountains Meet the Lagoon
We open this edition from the northernmost tip of the Adriatic, where writer Ippolito Nievo once described Friuli Venezia Giulia as a "small compendium of the universe." At the heart of this landscape, the Grado and Marano Lagoon hosts 1,700 hectares of traditional fishing valleys (valli da pesca). Here, the resilience and quiet devotion of local vallicoltori and fishermen serve as a living legacy, reminding us that protecting the Adriatic takes more than courage: it takes BRAVE communities working together.
💡 Echoes from the Adriatic: The Invisible Tide of Light Pollution
While glowing promenades and illuminated ports seem harmless, a landmark 2026 study highlights Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) as a growing, silent threat to our marine ecosystems. Coastal light penetrates shallow waters, disrupting spawning cues, altering zooplankton vertical migration, and throwing local food webs out of balance. Through BRAVE’s cross-border monitoring and smart digital tools, we are working to ensure that coastal management accounts for the night just as much as the day, because a healthy Adriatic needs its natural darkness.
🔬 BRAVE in Action: From Cuttlefish Eggs to the Health of the Adriatic Sea
Along the central Adriatic coast, Project Partner 4 (Marche Region) and the Politecnico delle Marche (UNIVPM) are turning the common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) into a sentinel of marine health. Building on best practices from the Interreg ARGOS project, researchers collaborate with local fishers to collect eggs during peak reproductive season. By combining histological and transcriptomic analyses, labs evaluate how microplastics, heavy metals, and pollutants affect embryonic development. Through our upcoming "Adopt a Cuttlefish" school initiative, we are also inspiring the next generation to safeguard our coastal ecosystems.
🎃 Spooky Secrets of the Adriatic
As a seasonal treat, this edition unearths seven eerie myths and legends spanning from Valbruna's sunken ruins and Istria’s first vampire, Jure Grando, to the sea monster of Ragusa.
But as winter approaches, our focus sharpens on the future: the BRAVE partnership is preparing to gather in person for our Project Meeting and Steering Committee at the Crofish Fair in Poreč at the end of November. There, we will review our pilot findings, align our strategies, and chart our next course for a resilient Adriatic.
