Info Day in Sepino: Bringing Archaeology to Life Through Digital Immersion

On 26 September 2026, the Archaeological Park of Sepino hosted an ARCHAEODIGIT Info Day organised on the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2026. The initiative offered visitors the opportunity to discover the remains of the ancient Roman city of Saepinum through a combination of archaeological interpretation and innovative digital technologies.
The event was organised as part of the project, providing an opportunity to present one of the concrete outcomes of the project's pilot action and explore new ways of experiencing and interpreting archaeological heritage.
Discovering Saepinum through an immersive experience
The Info Day combined a thematic guided visit of the archaeological park with a 360° immersive experience and Virtual Reality session, focusing on three monuments of the ancient Roman city.
During the guided visit, participants explored the archaeological remains and learned more about the history and significance of Saepinum. The experience was then enriched through digital technologies, allowing visitors to engage with the heritage site from a different perspective and explore new forms of archaeological storytelling.
By combining the physical archaeological site with 360° content and Virtual Reality, the ARCHAEODIGIT pilot demonstrates how digital tools can complement traditional forms of heritage interpretation and create more immersive, accessible and engaging experiences for visitors.
Connecting archaeological heritage and digital innovation
The event provided an opportunity to experience first-hand how digital transformation can contribute to the valorisation and communication of archaeological heritage.
The combination of guided interpretation, immersive content and VR created new ways for visitors to connect with the ancient city, while maintaining a strong link with its historical and archaeological evidence. The experience also highlighted the potential of digital technologies to make archaeological sites more accessible to different audiences and to encourage new forms of interaction with cultural heritage.
From the archaeological park to new forms of cultural tourism
The ARCHAEODIGIT Info Day in Sepino also demonstrated how innovative digital solutions can contribute to the development of more engaging, inclusive and sustainable cultural tourism experiences.
By testing immersive technologies directly within an archaeological context, the pilot action explores how digital innovation can support heritage sites in communicating their stories in new ways, without replacing the experience of the physical site.
The Info Day offered an opportunity to share the results of the ARCHAEODIGIT pilot action with visitors and the local community, while demonstrating how technology and innovation can open new perspectives for discovering and experiencing the past.
The event was held as part of the European Heritage Days 2026, contributing to the wider celebration of Europe's shared cultural heritage.
