As summer draws to a close, our marine and coastal environments continue to face severe pressures. Record-breaking Mediterranean heatwaves and soaring sea temperatures have pushed marine ecosystems to their limits, triggering physiological stress across species and underscoring the urgency of adaptive marine management.
Yet, these challenges only strengthen our resolve. Issue #3 of the BRAVE newsletter “Adriatic Horizons: Aquaculture, Heritage, and Coastal Protection” highlights how cross-border cooperation, innovative field monitoring, and public engagement are transforming marine conservation across Italy and Croatia.
What’s Inside Issue #3?
A Smart Horizon for Adriatic Aquaculture: Step into the sheltered waters of the Krka River estuary in Šibenik, where Pilot Site 1 was launched by the MARBLE Centre of Excellence, DIH AgriFood Croatia, and the Ruđer Bošković Institute. Featuring a permanently anchored 200-square-meter research platform, this high-tech "Smart Mussel Farm" streams real-time environmental data via multi-parameter water probes, underwater imaging sonar, and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). This data directly reinforces BRAVE’s core mission: creating data-driven tools for sustainable aquaculture and resilient coastal management.
Tracking the Health of Zadar County’s Waters: Assessing marine health requires looking beyond total catch numbers. Led by the Zadar County team, BRAVE’s monitoring campaign tracks somatic indices and health indicators across protected Natura 2000 zones, aquaculture areas, and urban coastlines. Utilizing bioindicators like the Mediterranean mussel alongside key local fish species, researchers are building a detailed baseline to understand how environmental changes impact marine life.
Art, History, and the Sea: Conservation relies on ecological literacy and cultural engagement. We explore the deep connection between heritage and marine stewardship by examining Šibenik’s 16th-century St. Nicholas Fortress (and its nearby St. Anthony’s Channel Visitor Center) alongside Trieste’s 19th-century Miramare Castle (home to the BioMa Museum managed by WWF Italy). Both sites demonstrate how interactive storytelling, immersive exhibits, and educational centers bridge the gap between scientific research and the public.
Fieldwork Ahead: Preparing for the Next Cycle
As we enter autumn, BRAVE cross-border teams stand ready for a fresh cycle of field activities. From tracking invasive alien species and genetic eDNA sampling to expanding multi-parameter sensor arrays, every data point collected feeds into our upcoming Smart Digital Platform.
Together across both shores of the Adriatic, we are converting scientific monitoring into concrete, resilient management solutions.
