ICARUS 4th webinar on open data use in transport planning was held on November 11th. The webinar provided important inputs on various source of information and their potential application in transport planning.

ICARUS 4th webinar took place on November 11th focusing on open data application in transport planning. The webinar was organized by the Venice International University (VIU) and the lesson was provided by Mr. Gennario Ciccarelli, transport engineer with European and international experience in the field.

In line with the ICARUS focus – improving multi-modal cross-border passenger connections framed in the context of “Mobility as a Service”- Mr. Ciccarelli gave an outlook of surveys that can be performed to collect data necessary for transport planning, starting from more traditional methods to more innovative ones.

In this way we can collect data on transport networks (roads and railways), traffic counts, railway timetables and information on vehicles moving within a network (passengers or freight). Such data may be interesting and useful for transport service users, application developers and open data community, transport operators, transport funding actors and citizens in general.

Mr. Ciccarelli spoke also about some initiatives at European, national and local level, as well as on commercially available date.

Finally, he concluded by presenting how GPS technology can be used for collecting information on cycling demand and supply. Through specific application and the use of GPS technology indications on the need for new bike lanes or parking spaces can be identified.
