Study visit in Venetian Lagoon

On the 28th February and the 1st March 2023, HATCH project partner CORILA and IUAV University of Venice hosted a study visit to Venetian Lagoon.

Venetian lagoon ecosystem was in focus of the study visit of HATCH Project. This lagoon is the largest wetland in the Mediterranean basin. Its structure depends on the balance between the amounts of solid material brought by the sea, the freshwater river system and the erosive forces of the sea. There are various negative factors that influence the lagoon ecosystem, causing multiple environmental impacts. Climate change is among the major drivers of change. Therefore, the participatory approach for planning and lagoon governance at the interface between land and sea is necessary. The study visit participants had a unique opportunity to visit places and meet different local community stakeholders trying to make a positive impact and be the voice of the lagoon future. This was an excellent opportunity to learn how various factors need to be calculated in when talking about the sustainable future of our natural resources. Thus, there are many clear links between experiences in the Venetian lagoon and project HATCH, which is contributing to unifying various disciplines and sectors into overarching MSP framework for better protection of the Adriatic Sea.
