Podcast Highlights
This episode (in italian) of “Voci delle Cooperative” podcast, was recorded in Ravenna, about two years after the floods that devastated Emilia-Romagna on May 2023. That disaster showed how vulnerable everyone is in front of climate change, underscoring the need for immediate action to reduce atmospheric emissions.
The event also shifted the outlook for the farming sector in one of Italy’s richest and most cultivated areas, urging farmers and companies to find alternatives to keep their business running amidst growing weather challenges, from prolonged drought to torrential rains.
Farmers can play a major role in the reduction of carbon emissions, but agricultural practices that build resilience to climate shocks carry a cost, while the resulting benefits are not always easy to estimate.
The GECO2.2 project, funded by Interreg Italy Croatia Programme, is experimenting a new path to encourage farmers adopting new and better procedures: the creation of a voluntary carbon credit market, to monetize the carbon sequestration efforts they can implement in their fields.
Project managers, agronomists, scientists, farmers, legal experts and co-operative leaders share their insights on this new promising experience.
