Carbon Credits and Certification: Strategic Conference held in Trilj

TRILJ (Croatia) – January 21, 2026 –  As part of the GECO 2.2. project, financed by the Interreg Italy - Croatia program and co-financed by the Office for Cooperation with NGOs of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, Kaštela Olive Growers' Association "Mastrinka", in cooperation with Croatian partners the Rural Development Agency of Zadar County and the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, successfully held a conference at the CEKOM 3LJ Institution focused on the future of carbon credits and certification in Croatia. The hybrid event brought together key institutional players, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition, and Croatian Agency for Agriculture and Food, Split-Dalmatia County, alongside farmers, SMEs and environmental non-profit associations.

The panel discussion centered on the evolving EU carbon credits certification framework. Experts emphasized that creating a credible Voluntary Carbon Market in Croatia requires a a structured roadmap: beginning with national approval from the Ministry of Environmental Protection before seeking endorsement from the European Commission.

During the session, participants explored the GECO 2.2 tools designed to help stakeholders navigate this emerging market. The strong presence of public agencies confirmed a shared commitment to building a transparent and reliable system for carbon sequestration.

Through GECO 2.2, local actors are now better equipped to transform sustainable agricultural practices into tangible environmental and economic opportunities.
