Development of shared waste management models and pilot implementation

In this section, you will find some information about Work Package 2.The main aim of WP 2 is to design, test and develop shared waste management models to apply in fishing ports in Italy and Croatia to reduce waste, particularly plastic, related with fishing activities and reuse and recycle materials. WP2 will initially perform a market research aimed at finding and evaluating at least two potential solutions for substituting plastic boxes on fishing vessels with reusable ones and for implementing better waste management activities in fishing ports. These first solutions will undertake a technical-economic feasibility study and their application will be discussed with fishers and other stakeholders, e.g. regional authorities. Each of the 4 ports involved in the project will chose at least one solution to implement as a pilot based on their needs and will test the chosen solution. These pilot studies will highlight pros and cons of each strategy and provide a model that at the same time is shared but tailored for the specific local contexts.

Developing shared policy and management recommendations

Developing shared policy and management recommendations

WP4 will develop a joint strategy by involving local and national authorities to co-design synergistic,circular-economy-based waste management policy and management recommendations to limit plastic use and reduce waste production in fishing ports and related activities, and promote fishingfor litter. Permanent advisory boards will be created in Italy and Croatia and regularly meet to discussspecific local needs. Representatives of key stakeholders will take part to these boards to compare current management approaches and policies, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and assess pilots. Boards will then elaborate advices for improved policies and management to be implemented and tested. National boards will also provide feedback about ongoing initiatives. The two National boards will be merged in a single, inter-regional technical board that will also regularly meet to compare the respective experiences and identify shared, coordinated policy and management advices.
