Fishers and Fishing for Litter: Protecting the Sea Together

03/02/2026

The sea gives us so much. Yet in recent years, it has increasingly been returning items that do not belong there - plastic bottles, bags, and other waste that pollute marine ecosystems and coastal communities.

Within the FishNoWaste project, the Association for Nature, Environment and Sustainable Development Sunce has launched the campaign “Fishers and Fishing for Litter”. The campaign highlights the stories of those who know the sea best: fishers who, alongside their daily work, actively contribute to cleaning and protecting the marine environment.

Fishers do not only bring in their catch. Very often, their nets also collect waste - clear evidence of the growing impact of marine litter. Through their actions and experiences, the campaign raises awareness of the urgent need to reduce, reuse, recycle, and ensure proper waste management, both on land and at sea.

As part of the campaign, the main video “Fishers and Fishing for Litter” has already been released on YouTube.

In the coming months, the campaign will continue with a series of nine short videos, featuring real stories from fishing ports and the sea, as well as tailored messages for fishers, schools, students, and the wider public.

By sharing these firsthand experiences, the campaign aims to inspire collective responsibility and action - so that we can protect the sea together, today and for future generations.
