Grobnik's bellringers are based on historic cultural findings about shepherds who have set out into mountains to drive away wild beasts in order to secure paths for herds in arrival. This image is now mostly recognizable due to the carnival in Rijeka. In memory of their effort, association Grobnički dondolaši, which was founded by Nikola Vrančić Kolja and friends, to represent region of Primorje-Gorski Kotar county in the near vicinity as well as throughout the entire Europe.
Polenta and cheese festival
- The „Palentar“ association, of which I am currently president, was founded on the basis of the Polenta and Cheese Festival. Namely, 30 chefs in the preparation of a 700 kilograms heavy polenta came to the conclusion that it is necessary to establish an association for promotional purposes and better visibility of our gastronomic delicacy in the nearer and wider area – revealed Nikola Vrančić Kolja in the latest Excover interview.
The legend of bellringers
- As for the legends, in my opinion, the most authentic legend is the one about the battle that took place on Grobničko polje (Grobnik field). Or, better yet, several battles that occurred there and where our bellringers have also participated. They have bravely driven out Turks and Tatars from this territory, yet we do not have any written proof to it. However, according to historical stories that were passed on from generations to generations our ancestors stated that were several battles where our bellringers have helped the Croatian army in achieving great and significant victories – explained Nikola Vrančić Kolja, the guardian of tradition in Primorje-Gorski Kotar county.
