Talk at University of Foggia: Strategies Against Food Waste

12/10/2025

The ECOFOODCYCLE Talk - Policies, practices and stakeholders against food waste, held on Wednesday 1 October 2025 at the University of Foggia, brought together academics, businesses, and institutions to share experiences and strategies in the fight against food waste. The seminar, hosted at the Department of Economics, was part of the European project ECOFOODCYCLE - Interreg Italy-Croatia 2021-2027 and was organised within the courses Agricultural Economics and Policy, Economics of Public Enterprises and Administrations, and EU Economics and Policies.

The seminar opened with a presentation of the ECOFOODCYCLE Project, followed by institutional greetings from Rector Lorenzo Lo Muzio and Department Director Pasquale di Biase. The keynote address was delivered by Antonio Stasi, President of the Regional Agri-Food District, who outlined the challenges and opportunities in building more sustainable food systems. This was followed by a lecture from Dr. Francesco Emanuele Celentano of the University of Bari, who examined the role of law as a lever to reduce food waste, highlighting both Italian and European regulatory frameworks.

The subsequent discussion, chaired by Professor Nunzio Angiola, Project Manager of ECOFOODCYCLE, saw representatives from Maiora–Despar Centro Sud, Coop Alleanza 3.0, Mercati di Città, and Megamark engage in dialogue with academics and territorial stakeholders such as the Chamber of Commerce of Foggia, Confcooperative, Confagricoltura, and Confcommercio. The debate explored practical solutions, innovative models, and the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors to address the food waste challenge.

The Talk attracted wide participation and offered students of the University of Foggia a valuable learning opportunity, also recognised with 0.5 ECTS credits. The event demonstrated once again how the ECOFOODCYCLE Project is fostering awareness, building capacity, and strengthening cross- border cooperation between Italy and Croatia to promote a more sustainable management of food resources.
