BIOPRESSADRIA aims to combat the degradation of Adriatic coastal biodiversity, particularly marine seagrass meadows like Posidonia oceanica, exacerbated by tourism activities. These habitats play a crucial role in enhancing biodiversity, purifying water, protecting coastlines, storing carbon, and providing other ecosystem services. However, increased coastal use, nautical traffic, anchoring, and mooring threaten their stability and health.
The project's primary objective is to develop and implement a unified cross-border strategy to address these challenges. This strategy will incorporate a comprehensive toolbox of conceptual and practical solutions aimed at reducing the impacts of beach and nautical tourism on coastal biodiversity. Key actions include rapid monitoring and assessment of site quality and pressures, engaging a wide network of stakeholders including public managers, capacity building, public awareness campaigns, and actively mitigating habitat disturbances through improved mooring and spatial planning.
Despite existing knowledge, there remains a gap in actionable proposals and methods for implementing localized protective measures. BIOPRESSADRIA seeks to fill this gap by systematizing a strategy that not only protects local coastal environments but also serves as a scalable model for broader Adriatic conservation efforts. Through intense stakeholder engagement, training activities, and a cross-border approach, the project aims to foster joint biodiversity protection and restoration across the region.
