Protecting Posidonia oceanica, connecting expertise

The protection of marine ecosystems requires cooperation, shared knowledge and innovative solutions. These principles were at the heart of the international BLUEQ Field Trip, held in Šibenik from 7 to 9 July 2026 and organised by the Public Institution Nature of Šibenik-Knin County within the Interreg IPA ADRION BLUEQ project.

During the event, the BIOPRESSADRIA partner Kornati National Park presented the BIOPRESSADRIA project to partners and experts from Croatia, Italy, Greece and Albania, highlighting ongoing actions aimed at preserving marine biodiversity and promoting more sustainable approaches to coastal management. A particular focus was placed on the conservation of Posidonia oceanica meadows, one of the most valuable marine habitats in the Adriatic. These ecosystems play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity, storing carbon and supporting the resilience of coastal environments, while also facing increasing pressures from human activities, including uncontrolled anchoring. Among the solutions presented, the eco-friendly mooring system implemented in Kornati National Park through BIOPRESSADRIA represented a concrete example of how sustainable practices can help reduce impacts on sensitive marine habitats. Participants learned about monitoring activities, anchoring pressure assessments, habitat mapping and other conservation measures developed to support the long-term protection of Posidonia meadows.

The meeting also created an important opportunity for dialogue between BIOPRESSADRIA and BLUEQ, two projects sharing a common commitment to safeguarding Adriatic marine ecosystems. Through the exchange of experiences and methodologies, partners discussed approaches to habitat monitoring, conservation strategies and practical management solutions that can be adapted in other marine protected areas.

By bringing together expertise from different regions of the Adriatic, the BLUEQ Field Trip strengthened cooperation between initiatives working towards a common goal: ensuring healthier, more resilient marine ecosystems for future generations.
