About section
About
The BIOBASED project aims to enhance Italy-Croatia’s position in the blue bioeconomy by transferring research knowledge to producers. It focuses on:
- Seaweed production in Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) to reduce environmental impacts and innovate aquaculture.
- Valuing seaweeds and fisheries/aquaculture by-products using a Biorefinery Approach.
- Producing high-value compounds and functional feeds for aquaculture.
The project will implement an action plan to market bio-based products from marine biomass and aquaculture by-products. SMEs will test this approach in pilot sites (Gargano and Chioggia in Italy, Mali Ston in Croatia) across sectors like aquaculture and fisheries. The project also aims to train new "sea farmers" and blue-biotechnologists, aligning with the UN-Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
