The AdSWiM project and the World Earth Day 2021

Adswim celebrates the EarthDay with the reefballs, new “fish houses” in Lignano.

Two men, a woman and a boat on Adriatic! This could be our today’s title to celebrate the #EarthDay. Our partners from CAFC ltd. and project manager of University of Udine have been busy today with the laying of reef balls along the coast near Lignano Sabbiadoro (Italy) next to the Depuration Plant.

The theme for #EarthDay2021 is Restore Our Earth”, which focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world's ecosystems. In this way, the theme rejects the notion that mitigation or adaptation are the only ways to address climate change.

Today's CAFC activity is part of the adswim interventions in order to improve the sustainability of the Adriatic and the coastal areas and is a innovative way to restore Adriatic ecosystem.  A Reef Ball allows to counter the voracity of the sea through an eco-friendly solution and it is an artificial fish restocking barrier. A reef ball is a naturalistic engineering work carried out to promote the marine biodiversity of the seabed and contract erosion of the sandy coast. Constructed with "seafriendly" concrete with high biological compatibility, with a PH close to that of the sea and with different surface textures, these structure integrate perfectly into the marine ecosystem and facilitate the colonization of the module. In fact, the particular shape produces favourable conditions for the development of marine flora and fauna through the creation of shelters and burrows for sedentary fish species, the protection of eggs and young specimens.

CAFC Ltd manages the Integrated Water Service (aqueduct, sewerage and purification segments) of 120 Friuli Central Area municipalities with 500 Waste Water Treatment Plants. AdSWiM technicians share their knowledge in process optimization and energy saving in WWTP and utilization of even more ecological technologies for pathogens removal. Involved with public authorities they will revise law limits on nutrients form WWTP effluents, as a controlled source of nutrients for marine environment.

We are preparing a video on the reef balls story that will be ready on June 8, on the International day of the Oceans and Seas.  In order to connect the Earth to the Sea, because 70% of our planet is oceans – Maybe we should call it Planet Ocean instead of Planet Earth.

Do you Sea? Because the Sea matters.
