Project specific objectives
- To promote sustainable agricultural practices that increase carbon stocks in both soil and biomass, contributing to climate change mitigation.
- To enhance farm resilience to extreme weather events such as floods and droughts, thereby reducing disaster risks.
- To support ecosystem services by preserving natural resources and improving soil health, water retention, and pollination.
- To foster biodiversity, encouraging the diversification of crops and natural habitats within agricultural systems.
- To facilitate access to voluntary carbon credit markets for farmers, enabling them to monetize their climate-friendly practices and participate in emerging green economies.

Project main outputs
- 2 joint action plans to align GECO2.2 with EU and regional voluntary carbon market models.
- 1 shared certification scheme to enhance the reliability and certifiability of GECO2.2 carbon credits.
- 1 pilot action to test tools and methods under real farming conditions.
- Joint solutions for climate adaptation and mitigation in agriculture.
- Joint training sessions for stakeholders from all partner regions to support adoption and replication.

About section
About
GECO2.2 builds on the success of GECO2, aiming to enhance carbon credits from agriculture. It promotes sustainable farming practices that increase carbon storage, improve resilience to climate impacts, and boost biodiversity. By establishing a regional carbon market, it aligns with EU strategies and policies. Key objectives include setting up the market, supporting farmers in adopting eco-friendly practices, and enhancing operational tools with blockchain and GIS technology. The project aims to raise public awareness, enable companies to offset carbon footprints, and create a self-sustaining market model applicable across Europe.

05/05/2026Turning farming into climate action: carbon markets at the centre of the Zadar international conference
How can farming become part of the solution to climate change? This was the key question at the international conference held on 21 April at the University of Zadar, where institutions, researchers and agricultural stakeholders came together to explore the future of carbon markets in agriculture. Organised within the framework of GECO 2.2, the event marked an important milestone in the transition from pilot experiences to a structured and credible carbon trading system for the agricultural sector.
