About section

About

Traditional maritime practices, such as rowing, sail-making, and local environmental knowledge, are rapidly disappearing across the Adriatic. TRANS MARIS addresses this loss of intangible cultural heritage by fostering structured mentorship between experienced heritage bearers and young people. By reconnecting generations, the project revitalises endangered skills and empowers youth to transform these traditions into innovative, sustainable tourism offers that connect the coast with its rivers and lagoons.
The project implements a hands-on training model involving maritime museums in Cesenatico and Rovinj. Key activities include an international sailing trip for mentees, a
scientific field school in marine biology, and a creative school focused on digital storytelling and podcasting. These initiatives allow youth to act as co-creators of new cultural products, bridging the gap between grassroots traditions and global heritage governance—including the ongoing joint UNESCO candidacy process.
Cross-border cooperation is essential, as the Adriatic’s maritime history transcends national boundaries. By pooling the expertise of Italian and Croatian partners, TRANS MARIS builds a unified strategy for heritage safeguarding. This replicable model ensures that maritime traditions remain a driver for community resilience, social inclusion, and economic diversification throughout the cross-border region.
