TransH2 Project Presented at NAV 2025

14/07/2025

The TransH2 project was presented by the project partners the University of Trieste and Navalproggetti Srl at the 21st International Conference on Ship & Maritime Research – NAV 2025, Italy’s premier scientific event on maritime technology. Held in Messina from 18th to 20th June 2025, and organized by the Associazione Italiana di Tecnica Navale, the conference brought together researchers, professionals, and industry representatives to discuss innovation, sustainability, and the future of the maritime sector.

The team participated in the session “Green and Smart Ships for Sustainable Navigation”, on 18th June 2025. The presentation, titled “Hydrogen Powered Ferries in the Adriatic Sea: A Technical and Environmental Assessment”, addressed the urgent need to reduce emissions in the maritime sector and introduced the objectives of the TransH2 project. Focusing on three selected ferry routes in the Adriatic Sea, the study combined technical and environmental assessments to evaluate the feasibility of hydrogen-powered operations.

Key highlights included:

  • Route Selection: Three use cases were chosen based on operational relevance, distance, and traffic.
  • Technical Assessment: Analysis of fuel needs, vessel performance, and energy demand.
  • Environmental Assessment: Estimation of potential CO₂ emission reductions compared to traditional marine fuels.
  • Main Findings: Hydrogen propulsion proved to be both technically viable and environmentally beneficial for short-sea ferry routes.

This contribution supports the transition toward more sustainable and innovative maritime transport solutions.
