Italian Stakeholders representing Blind and Visually Impaired Individuals and Travellers with Pets, Visit Split and its own inland as Part of OMNIS Cross-Border Exchange

30/05/2024

As part of the OMNIS project, the Shuttle travel agency organized a cross-border exchange visit from May 18th to 19th to test and validate inclusive, sustainable itineraries and packages designed for blind and visually impaired tourists, as well as tourists travelling with guide dogs and pets. A group of 10 tourists from Italy visited Split and Split-Dalmatia County to experience local culture, customs, gastronomy, and wines. The participants included representatives from the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired Pesaro Section, their companions, Confesercenti, and the Tripdoggy brand, all of whom support OMNIS project activities.

On the first day, after arriving by overnight ferry from Italy, the tourists enjoyed a guided tour of Split's old city centre and Diocletian's Palace, adapted for blind and visually impaired individuals. Following the tour, the group visited a family olive farm, where they explored the olive grove, tasted olive oil, and enjoyed a traditional lunch. The day concluded with a visit to the interior of Dalmatia and the city of Sinj, where they explored the Sinj Alka Museum. The museum, showcasing the centuries-old heritage of the knightly game Alka, allowed the tourists to touch the exhibits, including Alkar uniforms, equipment, and weapons, enhanced by multimedia installations.

On the second day, the group travelled to the hinterland of Omiš, where they participated in a culinary workshop to make the traditional dish called soparnik and visited the History Museum of Poljica. Under professional guidance, they crafted their souvenirs as keepsakes of the trip. After lunch by the river Žrnovnica, the tourists concluded their visit with a wine tasting at a Split wine bar, where they were introduced to local wines.

The next phase of the exchange will see Croatian tourists visiting Italy from June 25th to 27th in Cagli.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired Pesaro Section and the Tripdoggy brand for their unwavering support since the inception of the OMNIS project.
